How would a person write March 8, 2010 in a piece of literature?

I'm writing a book and I want to put in a certain day but I don't know how to write it in a piece of literature. Do I need to spell it all out or can I put the numbers? If an english teacher or major or anyone that happens know about this subject, would you kindly answer my question?
