a bad writer so please help haha? My Journey
Although I took a weird journey getting to where I am now, I wouldn’t have done it any different. Since I was six years old I have been living in Orange County, surrounded by fabulous dressed people all around me, but now I am ready to get out of here. I’m not your typical girl who has grown up dreaming about my future career in the fashion industry, but even though it took me a little while to realize it, I can tell you that I am definitely just as passionate about it, if not more.
Figuring out which way to go in the fashion industry wasn’t easy for me because every aspect of it interests me. When it came time for me to decide, during the end of my senior year, I chose to go down the path of clothing production. Once I had decided that, I needed to decide what school to go to. After reviewing my high school transcripts I doubted myself and assumed I would only be able to go to a community college where I would then transfer to a fashion school. Luckily, my boyfriend pushed me to look into the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising since it’s only 10 minutes from my house. I then decided to apply to FIDM, where I was granted admission.
I accepted as soon as I found out without even thinking about other possible options. Once I began school, this last summer, I couldn’t help but feel like I had chosen the wrong major. But since it had only been a few weeks I decided to stick with my major, product development, for the rest of the quarter. At the end of that quarter I just knew it wasn’t the right major for me, but I also didn’t know which one was. I started researching all about different careers and the ones that stood out most to me were public relations and styling. Although FIDM has taught me many things throughout my two quarters there, I feel like being in New York will prepare me for what to expect when I enter the fashion world.
The reason I have chosen to apply for the FIT Advertising and Marketing Communications program is because I want to eventually work with a company specializing in public relations. I also enjoy coordinating events and think that FIT can provide me with the education to further my knowledge in these specific areas.
Truthfully, I have never really enjoyed any of my past jobs, as much as I enjoy my current unpaid internship. Throughout high school I had a job as a children’s party guide and I worked at a surf shop. Both jobs weren’t your typical fashion student’s jobs but it made me realize that those were two things I definitely didn’t want to pursue a career in! As boring as both jobs were, I took something from both of them. They taught me that fashion is everywhere where you look. Currently I am interning with a women’s clothing company called BB Dakota. I absolutely love it, not only because it is the industry I want to have a career in, but I get to see the behind-the-scene process of clothing being made. Even though I am not getting paid, the experience is completely worth it.
There are many other schools to choose from in New York, but I know that FIT is the right one for me. Even though it took me all this time and this whole journey, I couldn’t be happier that this is where it has taken me today. I need something that will challenge me and take me to the next level and I am confident that FIT will do this and much more.
