If one of my friends was to pick me up and did not show up and was unreachable by phone I'd be concerned for her safety, not whining on a public forum about how mad you are.

My friend called me yesterday and invited my son to her sons birthday party for today. So I went and bought a gift and everything. She was supposed to come and pick us up, because my husband has the one car that works. Mine is in the shop right now. She was supposed to be here two hours ago! I tried to call her, and now all of a sudden her phone doesn't work! How freaked up is that? My son is really disappointed. Why would someone do that? I bet next time I see her, she will give me some erroneous excuse. What do you think about it?

If she was that busy getting things ready for the party she shouldnt of made the agreement to pick you up. If she was running late she could of called you and she even could of picked you up earlier so that you could help her get things ready. Would I be mad? You bet..
Unfortunately its your son who probably feels worst right now. Try getting over your anger and listen to your son. Apologize even though this was totally not your fault. Tomorrow your son can call her son to wish him a happy birthday and give him his gift next time they see eachother. Since it wasnt her sons's fault he should still get the gift no matter the mother's excuse. It was wrong what she did, but your son's are still friends regardless.

Without knowing yet why she hasn't turned up I would prefer not to comment.
Don't get mad until you know exactly why she hasn't come to pick you up. She might have been involved in an accident or something like that. But if she's just not bothering to come and get you - you should forget all about her. She isn't your friend if she would deliberately do something like that. But it sounds very strange. Make sure you get a good explanation from her. 
i wouldn't be mad till i knew the reason
she could be in the hospital and thats why her phone is off

take your son out somewhere nice to make up for it
