I forgot my passcode to my iphone 3G...help!?

So, i set a passcode for my iphone 3g but i forgot which numbers i pressed! What do I do? Is it true if I try 10 times...it would let me back in but would erase my data? Also, if the data erases, would it just go back to the default settings for the iphone 3g? Thanks! Please help
