I have a Kazaa/Limewire question.......?

How come when after I have downloaded and installed either Limewire or Kazaa, it won't let me start downloading yet? How long does it take before the song searches start searching? Basically i typed in a band to search adn nothing is happening yet.
how long do i have to wait until it loads and connects to internet??
