I have a Motorola Wireless connection - speed goes from 11.0 to 5.5. Cause????

My wireless and highspeed connection is in the basement. I use my computer in the kitchen. The connection is usually low but recently it has been completely cutting out on me on occasion. Have checked to make sure all is plugged in. When I take my computer to the basement, connection is excellent.
