I have a problem with my Directv DVR.....?

So the DVR is supposed to be able to record two shows at once or one show while you watch something else. Lately, my dvr is only letting me record one thing at a time and i have to be on the channel I am recording. This is very annoying and defeats the purpose of the dvr. Why is this happening and how can I fix it?
