My hubby has taken it apart and found it does not have any glow plugs but it has this heater element thingy. Does anyone know what this is called and if it could be the reason the car wont start. We have to jump start it or put batt on charge to get it going. When we do get it started it runs beautifully, no knocking etc. It's done 139000 miles.
Sorry forgot to add we just bought a new battery. I did a search online to find the cheapest one suitable for our car and came up with one with 710 cold cranking for £80. We bought this one so we didnt think it would be the battery.
The engine turns over OK, sounds as though its going to start but it just doesn't get there.
It is a diesel but it does not have glow plugs. Lots of people have told us it does but my hubby (whos a mechanic) has looked and looked and cannot find any, just this heater thing.

You state "We have to jump start it or put batt on charge to get it going." Buy a new battery, the existing one is not holding its charge and does not have enough power to fire up the "Preheater" and turn over the motor.

Unless the engine is a diesel it does not have glow plugs. If you have to jump start the engine or charge the battery to get it to start something is wrong with your charging system. Check the alternator to make sure it is working. If it is check to see what could be draining the battery when it is not running.
