...the top 6mm so that the chip is gone I seem to remember many years ago a solution entailing filling the glass with cold water up where the cut is to be, then wrapping petrol soaked string round the outside, again where the cut is to be, then igniting the string, whereupon the glass will crack in the required place. Can anyone confirm this ?

Yeah it works something like that, but your dealing with crystal glass. don't take a chance. Go to a fine estate auction house in your area and ask for a referral to a glass person whom specializes in this type of repair. When they are done you wont even know there was a problem.
