I just bought a PS3 and was wondering do I really need to download firmware

so my blu-rays will play? Do you need BD-live to player some of the blu-rays. And also did they use the same parts to make the 60gb as they did with the 40gb? My 40 gb feels cheaply made

You don't NEED bd-live to play blu-ray. It already can. Unlike 360 which forces you to by a HDDVD drive to play HDDVD which has completely lost the war to blu-ray. And the 40gb is made with the same materials as the 60gb. It may feel cheap but the ps3 is the toughest console of all of them. They have a .5 percent chance of breaking and the 360 has a 33% chance! And the ps3 can be dropped from a very high distance and still work.

your 40GB is a real PS3 although it has less space to save stuff it was also made with quality.....and the BD-live is just another cool feature that was included in the latest firmware it allows you to access to cool content via internet...it can be videos..extras or even pictures of the movie....and you can play blu-ray movies as soon as you take your PS3 out of the box.....you don't need to download anything.....
