I need help with applications on the Itouch/Iphone can someone help?

I wanted to know if there is an application on the i touch or i phone that allows the person to close the application but still be signed into the application and receive IMs ( preferably this is free and notifies me when i get an IM. I kinda need this so that i can close the program without signing off to like go on the internet and check my email but still be connected to chat and be able to receive IMs ( sorry if this is confusing)

I actually understood what your talking about lol. The only program that comes to mind is AIM. what happens is that the new version keeps you signed in for 24 hours, but, it only notifies by texts. So, it wouldnt work on an ipod touch. I am not aware of any other programs that do this.
