The power of films can have a powerful affect on the way people think and it can even cause them to sympathise and empathise with the characters.
In this case, film can position the audience to rethink the way they treat people and it can change their perspective of people regarding their race or disability.
It can happen anywhere, on TV, newspaper, magazines and even on the streets. It’s called discrimination. This is a word that is heard today and was heard especially in a town called Maycomb, Alabama in the 1930’s and also heard in Los Angeles. In the film ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ and ‘I am Sam’, racial problems and social injustice dominate the story.
Boo Radley went through his life never wanting to hurt a fly. He’s a nice caring guy, but people don’t see him that way instead they judge him based on his disability, distorted looks and behaviour. Throughout the film, the issue of social injustice is evidently pointed out by the creator, Harper Lee.
Boo Radley is constantly discriminated against by the little community of Maycomb. Having been imprisoned inside his own house for fifteen years has enabled the town to spread nasty rumours about him. But in fact, he is a fragile and gentle person.
The people are given a description of his appearance, a man of about six and a half feet tall and a long jagged scar that ran across his face and the children were afraid of him because of all the stories they hear about him from the people of Maycomb.
This description highlights the ignorance of the town, showing that
although many citizens have not seen Boo face to face, they still discuss his appearance as though they have.
The film has a great affect on the audience to positions them to evidently see the issues of social justice. And it has the power to make the audience feel sympathy towards people with a disability throughout the world.
In the film ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ a black man, Tom Robinson, is on trial for the rape of a young white woman, Mayella Ewell. Although his lawyer, Atticus Finch, clearly proves to the jury that Tom is innocent, he is still convicted of the crime by a white jury.
The injustice shown towards Tom is evidently a major event of the film because it was his skin colour that prevented justice to be served.
This film has a great affect on the audience to positions them to visibly see the social injustice going on. And it has the power to
change the world, by making us as the audience to empathise with Tom Robinson which can change the way many people treat others of different races.
‘I Am Sam’ is another good example
of how discrimination works in
society. A loving disabled man called Sam is told by the child protection services that he can’t take proper care of his daughter because of his disability, and to his best efforts he tries to regain custody. In the end he gets custody of his daughter as others realise that love is a major part of fathering.
The movie shows that although he is mentally disabled he is capable of taking proper care of his daughter through love, more so then his lawyer, Rita.
This film was so effective in positioning the audience to change their attitudes towards mentally disabled people throughout the world because it clearly shows that he can properly take care of his daughter just like any other human being.
Ever since there has been racism and discrimination in people there has been justice in some people, but only a small amount and it’s because of the power of films that has increased this sense of justice inside people throughout the world to such a great extent that it may be the main reason why there is justice in the world we now live in today.
