I'm writing a discursive essay for my English exam, and I don't know how to start it off.

The essay question is: What will it take for teenagers to change the negative image that the older generation have for them?

It's due in just over a week, but I really have no clue on where to start.

Personally, I believe that said negative image is brought on by the fact that the older generation are scared of teenagers, and they can't get rid of the bad image until teenagers stop being scared of each other.

I also think the media is partly to blame, for portraying teenagers as violent and antisocial, when this isn't always the case.

However, I've been told by my teacher that the introduction can't contain personal opinions, so any help would be appreciated.

Your opinion doesn't make much sense, but it's your essay. If this is an exam question you don't have much choice. You need to discuss what the KIDS need to do in order to change adults' opinion of them. Things like speaking politely, losing the attitude, and cleaning up a little. However, while those are good ideas, they're superficial. Some serial killers have been very quiet and preppy looking. (You could bring that up near the end) You might start out with a description: Paul is into heavy metal. He wears torn jeans, a studded leather jacket and an iPod. His hair is spiked and rarely clean. His first word when spoken to is "Whatever". He's actually very smart. He gets good grades and would like to go to college, but he needs money. However, when he spplies for jobs, no one ever calls him back. You take it from there.
