My Mom has her birthday coming up soon & she has a grandfather clock that has not been running for years it works & everything she just lost the book for it...

So I wanna get it up & running again & the only thing I know about the clock is it has weights on a chain that you pull up and the weight makes the clock function as the pendulum swings.

Okay, wind the clock. Hopefully you can still locate the key, which you put into an opening in the face of the clock and crank the the chain so the weight is up, swing the pendulum and if it keeps going, the clock is going.

You should know that grandfather clocks strike (a bell) a lot, sometimes on the hour, the quarter hour and half hour. Some people get used to it and like it as an almost constant reminder of what time it is. Some people hate them and never get used to them. Before you go to the trouble, you might inquire of another family member if maybe the reason it hasn't been running is somebody in the family, maybe your mother, is one who hates the striking.

How Stuff Works has a movie and narrative about grandfather clocks which you may find interesting.

All I can say is dust and moisture may have settled in the gearbox and you can try a can of compress air (like for computers) to blow it out.
It may have a worn gear or bushing. Try swinging (gently) the pendulum with the weights being reset to the upper positions and see if it will keep swinging on it's own.
If you have the manufacturer name, model number and maybe the serial number you can try to google search for a manual download or trouble shooting tips.
Good Luck
