I really want a snake?

I want a small snake for a beginner because I have never owned a snake. But the only problem is I love mice and rats and I don't want to see them being eaten up so is there any thing else I can feed it? Also I own a rat and that makes me really not want to feed a rat or mouse to a snake.

um...it depends where you live, like, if you live in MD, i would suggest getting a Northern Brown Snake, they grow to about 13 inches and eat slugs and worms! Or if you want a bigger snake, go for an Eastern Garter Snake, 18-26" and eat minnow and such, the only thing is that Garter Snakes eat their prey alive, so if you love fish, don't get that snake, or just don't hang around for the feeding. Those 2 snakes you'll probably have to catch yourself since i dont think that petstores sell them!
