I think my child's hermit crab has passed on, how can I tell her?

There is a fishy smell in the tank, and he has been "molting" for over a month now, when it has always taken them 3 weeks at the most. I peeked at him, (by peeling the tape back), and he looks like he's keeled over. I am pretty upset, he is the oldest one, and we've had him for over a year. He was also her favorite in-particular.

She has been having a really rough time lately due to a custody battle, and tension in the home between me and my boyfriend, and I am afraid springing this on her will worsen things. Yet she will find out, I am just not quite sure HOW to approach her. She is 11 yrs old, and although extra sensitive lately, is still capable of being resilient.
Here they are on a treadmill. We'll miss him.
