Something like a dark fairytale perhaps. Labyrinth, Alice in wonderland and the Miyazaki's movies all fit these nicely. I also like Tim Burton's stuff for his dark look and child like feel.
As far as books Philip Pullmans' "His Dark Materials" trilogy is good. The first book in the series is "The Golden Compass", which was made into a decent enough movie. How old are you? I don't want to recommend anything too inappropriate.
