I want a fish tank. I research it like crazyy awhile ago but foregot about all about em. What do I need? Freshwater first not salt. What kind of fish no guppies etc..

all fish need a little salt in their water, even goldfish. the categories of fish are freshwater, which are usually cooler water temperatures (like goldfish) tropical, which aren't "saltwater" fish much need warmer temperatures, and marine or salt water fish. those are much more complicated to go with.
if you don't want goldfish, i'd suggest a betta fish. they're easy to care for and are pretty hearty fish. i have a 15 gallon tank with 1 betta and 5 tetras. despite what most people say, you can keep bettas with other fish as long as they're small and non aggressive. also, any fish with long flowey fins will be attacked by the betta. as long as the fish have enough space, they can coexist together happily. some bettas are more aggressive than others, so some might need extra space. if you're interested in bettas, look here http://freshaquarium.about.com/cs/anabantids2/p/betta.htm
both bettas and goldfish will require a heater, especially if you live in colder climates. in the summer the temp. should be fine, but even goldfish need stabilized temperatures and sometimes in the winter the water just gets too cold.
