...potential employers in the future? Here's the deal:
I was an Independent Contractor with a company for a year. During my time there, they loved me and frequently confirmed that I was one of their favorites.
Towards the end of my time at the company, I faced some terrible, unexpected events in my life: miscarriage & death of my mother. As a result, I slipped into a mild depression; I wasn't able to exactly call the company and let them know what was going on because I was so out of it. All they knew is that my work wasn't getting done the way that it had in the past by me. So, anyway, because I was not exactly "employed" (remember I'm an independent contractor/agent) by them, they did what they call "separate" from me since they didn't know exactly what was going on with me.
I did contact them, and I let them know what went on; they were very compassionate and gave me more work; but they clearly let me know that it was a favor and that next time something like that happens let them know immediately.
Okay. So, everything was fine for a few months. And, then some other terrible things happened: a fire in my house. But, I communicated with them, and we worked through that.
However, three weeks after that, my father died and this time I had to abruptly leave my home and travel 3,000 miles. So, basically I would be gone for several days. Now, this all happened very suddenly and so I just sent my direct supervisor an e-mail that said ~ I don't want to have to do this, but it looks like I won't be able to continue with you all.
So, basically I suddenly quit.
I haven't been in contact with them since.
When I was still working with this company (actually about 7 months before I quit), I applied for a job with the state of Kansas. The position is basic; nothing advanced; it's more like customer service and entering data. On the application, they asked for my present employer and asked can they contact them. So, of course, I put "yes". Well, the state has just gotten around to interviewing me and advised me that they would be contacting the people on my application whom I said they could contact.
I'm wondering what sort of information this company will give about me? Do you think I can get a good reference from them?
One thing I want to note about this company: they had very high turnover and were very surprised that I stayed as long as I did. I let them know early on that I loved working with them. However, whenever I would call my direct supervisor (she was actually a coordinator that helped with any questions), she would be like ~ oh my gosh, I thought you were calling because you wanted to quit. And, I'd be like ~ naw, I'm staying with you guys indefinitely. So, basically, she was always nervous. And this type of conversation happened so many times in the year that I was there. I truly enjoyed working there; and the only reason I had to leave was because of personal issues. But, I didn't let them know what happened; they know I'm the private type, anyway.
But, I'm just wondering what sort of things they are likely to say about my time with them.
