I've seen videos of how some petsmarts treat their animals... I didn't really believe it but I went to a PetSmart today and asked if I could hold a Fancy Rat.. The employee picked her up by the tail. I was a little shocked but just held the rat gently and felt very bad for her. I am picking her up tomorrow to take home as a pet. It doesn't matter that I am paying for it, I just want that rat (who had very good temperment) and don't think she should be treated like that. I also saw him pick up another rat by the tail as well. Is this "right" ? Does this hurt them? The rats looked like they struggled for something to hold onto while he whipped them out of the cage by the tail... :(
He said he played with this rat a lot and it was very nice.

Rodents tails, like reptiles, can fall off from excessive pulling, however; it is a humane way of handling rodents, such as ones that are mean. It could be the person was just scared of the rat, which is acceptable. You have to remember, the workers of the petstore probably don't spend time with the animals so they most likely don't know enough about it to handle it safely.
