I went to see the movie Precious last night, why was everyone laughing?

I seriously was probably the only white girl in the theater. As I looked around at the people watching it a few couples were making out throughout the whole movie, some on their cell phones, and some were chatting with friends the whole time......but was bugged me the most is when the audience would burst out into laughter at scenes that were meant to be serious. Like when Precious was getting raped some people cracked up, and when she got pushed on the ground by that punk kid who wanted to "get with her"..........even the scene where her mom throws a TV at her, everyone was laughing!

I am so appalled at this, what is wrong with people? This movie was mostly targeted at African Americans, so why were they so rude during the film?
