Icon issues with Telus LG keybo phone?

I am with telus, and use an LG keybo phone. The new mail icon (small envelope at the top of the screen) is there, but I have no mail. I cant seem to get rid of the icon! I tried turning off and on the phone, and sending myself a message then deleting it, but neither worked. Any ideas?
