If I have Family Mobile (T-Mobile/Wal-Mart prepaid), can I get an unlocked

iPhone and use it instead? Also, would I have to cut my SIM card? I want an unlocked iPhone but I need to know if it will even work with this prepaid plan first. It is still T-Mobile, I'm using the Sidekick 4G right now. I only want answers from people that have experience, i.e. someone who has done this or similr before.
