If I lower the rate of uploading on Bittorrent, will my download rate increase?

I'm trying to download a big file and I want to know if what I just said would help. If not, list other ways to increase the download speed.
 
upload and download are independent, so it shouldnt matter as long as your computer can handle both. but bittorrent is already made for downloading big files, so i would think the only way to increase the speed would be to increase the speed of your connection
