if our economy keeps tanking, could the internet shut down completely.?

someone told me that if our economy keeps tanking that it will. It doesnt make sense to me. The internet is a network of computers all over the world why would it shut down?
no bud i usually dont but this got me to wondering about the ISPs could they go out of business and what then?
it would help if you told me why it was a stupid question. because business do go out of business. they tend to go alot more in hard times like a recession

I don't think the person you were talking to has any idea how the internet works. Also, it has become such an ingrained part of so many people's lives, that some countries classify internet access as a "basic necessity" in their public assistance programs. I'm not so sure the internet could be shut down at this point.
