If you travel is it better to attempt the language or make no attempt?

I'm a Hungarian who used to work in tourism. One day I came across a guy who actually knew enough to get around, but he not only said the words wrong, he used the wrong word order. While I found it funny (not in a rude manner), I wanted to hug him for his kindness.
 
I think tourists should at least learn to say hello, goodbye, please and thank you in the countries language. Its shows they're being polite and curtious to the countries culture, plus they aren't expecting everyone else to just know what they're on about.
 
Yeah, it's a common mistake. Personally, I have an aptitude for languages so I'm always able to master at least the basics of a language (in a short period of time), but I think it's important for everyone to at least try, even though many people struggle with other languages.
