If your faith/secularist identity was challenged, would you argue back?

Suppose someone said to you "You aren't really X" even though you are quite sure that you are. Would you haul out your credentials and stand up for your identity, or stand silent on the grounds that arguing would validate their presumption that they can judge said identity?

It depends on how intelligent I guess they might be. There noting to gain by arguing with a fool. And if the person is reasonably intelligent, it might be fun to have a discussion. But I really don't give a flip what people think about my spiritual/non-spiritual identity. If I had to count on people to feel good about myself, I would feel really crappy.

I was de-labelled as a capitalist, fascist, nazi, liar, even when I argued that I was indeed just that.

I felt so defeated.

I don't like to answer when I am on the "defensive" usually. I would look for an opportunity later to address the allegation in the way of an aggressive assertion and let them be the ones to prove me wrong.

If one attacks you on any level it because they recognize something in the first place. They are either afraid of what they might lose or what you may become.

Depends on the person and in what manner they challenged me. If their tactics are childish (and especially if they're someone I'm not familiar with), I'd mostly ignore them. If they bring up points worth debating, I may provide counterarguments. As long as all parties are civil and rational about it, I enjoy a good debate.

Like the first answerer said, depends. If it was someone on here, I wouldn't bother. Arguing on the internet, for the most part, is in my opinion, a waste of energy and time.

I'd give them a frosty "I'm sorry you feel that way" and walk off. I don't argue with people who stick their noses in my business. I don't go around broadcasting my faith, I don't even mention it unless someone asks me.

Probably not because what I believe or do not believe is my business. If someone wishes to challenge what my opinions are, let them write an editorial in the newspaper but I have no interest in their inferior agendas.
