I'm a complete newbie to 3D animation. does anyone know where I should start?

yeah, um I've always been interested in making 3D models and my own animations etc...

I was just wondering if anyone could recommend a program or anything?

I know there is heaps of free stuff, but what program is the best to use? (for a low budget computer =P)
and does anyone know of any good e books for a complete newbie?
