In a manner of speaking, which is more developed ancient China or current Japan?

Obviously if you compare them as of now, Japan would win but that's not the point.

Compare them on their contribution to their respective era, which is more developed?

Think of Thomas Edison vs Steve Jobs, although Steve Jobs invented/innovated a lot of great things but historically Edison contributed better/more useful inventions for humans.
