in gossip girl, why is serena's mom(lily) so rich?

i've always been curious about this because alot of times the wealthiness of lily is brought up quite some and apparently she has millions, maybe billions! and gossip girl never revealed why that is, but you know with chuck and blair's parents. im just so curious! i've pondered with the job of when she photographed, but i don't think you can be fabulously rich of that, and she just spends money freely sooo yeah.

I thought it was always just because she was already rich and married into rich families so her fortune just kept building.

i think its because she had a rich family, and then married several times to rich husbands. i.e chucks dad, and then he died and they were still married, so she would have got hundreds of millions possibly billions.
