In the Android game WordFeud, how are blank tiles scored?

I can't seem to figure it out. Sometimes they seem to give no points, while other times they do rack up points.

Does anyone know why they sometimes return points and sometimes do not? Does it perhaps have to do with whether the blank tiles are in a Double Word or TripleWord?
