why not write something where evil wins in the end as it does in 'real' life ,so just when the good whatever has nearly conquered the baddies once again - put a twist on it to make the reader think...
Wizards would be just a character aspect. If you create a dramatic world, unlike any other we repeatedly see, ie harry potter, you can write about anything. Just fill it with tons of original ideas.
