Information about Travel Card or similiar (in London)?

Hi everyone, I'm going to London for a study holiday next week. I'll be hosted by a family in Norbury (zone 3). From Norbury there's only the rail station (no tube) so I was wondering: what kind of ticket should I buy, counting I'm going to travel around London by both rail and tube? Does Travel Card include both of them? How much does it cost? My week ticket (I'm staying for 2 weeks so I suppose I'll buy two week tickets) will be accepted in every station? And where can I buy it?
I'm sorry for asking so many questions but I'm really worried, I've never been so far away from home all alone :)
Can you help me? (And sorry for the mistakes :P)
@Here there and everywhere: Oyster, yeah I've read about it. But loading it with money and using it for two weeks doesn't make me spend more than with some kind of (period) ticket?
And that "touch in and touch out" thing, means that I have to "touch" that yellow reader everytime I get on and get out of the tube/train/bus?
