I have a total of 8 apples. All of these have the same shape and size.
7 of these have the same weight. The eighth one is heavier than the rest. Using a beam balance, what is the minimum number of chances that you require to find out the heavier apple? Hint: Think out of the box.
Please don't think starightforward!

3 chances.
You put 4 on one and 4 on the other, then take the heavier one and balance them 2 and 2, and then weigh the final two against each other.
