Intermittent whining/whistling noise from 1999 Volvo S70?

I have a 1999 Volvo S70, nonturbo. For the past few weeks, I've been hearing a high-pitched noise from beneath the hood that starts when the car's been on for a few minutes. It makes this noise regardless of whether the car is idling or driving. I experience this problem with and without the air conditioning on. What could it be? It stops after a while. Could it be a vaccuum problem? thanks.
