Introducing a New Cat to Our Existing One?

My hubby brought home a 2 year old female cat (spayed) to save her from going to the pound. She was part of a multiple cat family and loves people. On the other hand, we have a young (10 months old) neutered male cat who was found as an orphaned feral kitten and I hand raised him. He is very selective and is very dominant (our male dog runs from him). When we tried to introduce them, our male cat tried to attack and we stopped him. He hisses and spits at the new cat and acts violently toward her. I'm too afraid to allow them to be near each other because of how angry he gets toward her.
Is there a way to slowly make him accept her? Why is he acting this way to begin with?
Any help is appreciated! Thank you!
