Introducing my cat to kittens, and he attacked me a couple of times.?

We rescued a two sisters about 3 months old from a laundry basket on the street giving them away. My mother had taken my cat Stuie for a while so we could get settled into our new place before bringing him in.

So it was very unexpected that we were bringing the kittens home before Stuie. First couple of time he was not happy with the kittens, he was distant with us.... and hissed at the kittens, which is normal at first from what the vet said.

Tonight we let the kittens come out to explore for an hour or so, like we did earlier today too; because theyve been saying in a different room with all their things, and the door shut so its closed off from our older cat.

Stuie was fine around the kittens, he didnt hiss at them, he came up to them and smelled them... started playing with me along side the kittens... and one of the kittens tried taking a twizzler wrapper Stuie was playing with and he patted her on her face -lightly, but he wasnt happy- so I was like "okay guys time to go back for a little bit" so I put their toys back with them and Stuie kept his, so I could have some one on one time with Stuie.

He followed me into the room and I put the kittens down and he wouldn't leave with me, so I picked him up, because he was getting grouchy with them. Shut the door with him in my arms and he attacked me. This has happened a couple of times... and I sat down with him when he calmed down... gave him a couple of treats, and told him how important he is and how much we love him, that it is okay with how he feels right now. He seemed calm down a bit. But I cant keep getting attacked, and its not because it physically hurts; but I just feel so bad that my Stuie is this upset.

How can I help the situation? I feel like I should let them learn their lessons, they are NEVER alone together, but I also feel like it's not fair for any of the animals to have to learn by being smacked by each other. Our apartment isn't huge, but its decent size so they can have their own areas.

Any advice would be great, thank you.
