My son is almost 3 months old and is a good eater. He is now taking 32-35 oz per day (and he sleeps 10 hours straight at night so that is only during his waking hours). My Dr. told me that he wants me to start solids once we reach 34oz per day. I am still hesitant as he is not even 3 months old yet but feel that it is ok if my Dr. told me to introduce them at this time. Does anyone have experience starting solids this early?

i know about all this crap about 6 months of age but igave my son solids at 3 months against my health visitors advice and i went behind her back, my son is a healthy happy 1 year old who is into everything, i wouldnt worry about it if your dr said its ok then i would do it to be honest your lucky to have the support of your dr on this as i didnt.

I don;t have experience of it because I would NEVER give a chlid that young solid food, they simply are not ready for it.

I'm in the UK, and here a lot of people do baby-led weaning (BLW) which means waiting till they can sit unaided and get the food to their mouth themselves before you give them solids. you then give them actual food, no purees. I did this with my daughter and she is now 11 months.

I'm afraid the advice in the UK is no solids before 6 months so I am amazed your doctor thinks it is OK to do it so early.

But then, I breastfed and never had any idea how many ounces of milk she was having, so I was able to be relaxed about solids, too.

I am so appalled a health professional would say to give a 3 month old baby solids! They are so not ready!

the AAP and the WHO do not recommend any solids at all until 6 months of age. if baby is on formula it's not quite as strict because their gut is already contaminated with foreign substance and the flora balance isn't as big a deal but they are not physically ready to eat solids until they can sit up unassisted and carry food to their mouths themselves. if you start solids this early, first of all baby will just push them out due to the tongue thrust reflex, and second of all baby will not put on weight as easily because solids have less calories than breastmilk or formula. sometimes doctors are wrong. just wait, for the health of your baby.

Solids wont necessarily make him any fuller, he may just be a hungry baby. I would personally stick to just breast milk/formula until 4 months. 3 months seems awfully early.
I tried at 4 months and he has no idea what to do with it, would thrust it out every time so I let it go.
Tried again at 5 months and he did much better.
I started with rice cereal, with formula very runny and only 2 or 3 bites.
I also did it every other day to gradually get his belly used to it.
By 5.5 months he was eating like a champ so I started offering it daily.
A week before he turned 6 months I started to offer veggies.

If you plan to follow the "AAP Rules" also make sure your child watches NO television until 2 years of age, does not use a walker, and does not use a swing until 6 months of age, no longer than 30 minutes 2 times a day.
Because the AAP also believes in all that garbage.

Good luck :)

Regardless of what the doctor says I think it still depends on the baby. If he's not ready, you'll know. He'll just keep pushing the food out with his tongue. It's a reflex they are born with, but stops when they are ready to eat solids.

I tried at 4 months because doc gave the ok, but she kept doing the tongue thing, so I tried again just before 5 months and she started taking it!

There is no greater benefit of cereal than formula, so there shouldn't be any rush on the solids. he will learn once he's ready!
