Introductions for a murder mystery novel...?

What is more interesting?
Starting right in the action, or going back to the murderers past,
building up to the murder?
I read up on my uncle on death row,
and his story is very horrible, yet interesting.
and I'd like to write a novel on it, but I'm not entirely sure on how to start it. In the action, or working up to the action. help.

I think you should start in the action to grab the reader, and then maybe back-track to why he did it.

I would say the murders past. You could do a lot with that, make his/her life really interesting. It would also give the reader a bit more background. Then again starting with the murder, would cause your readers to ask questions.
