Sony, Canon, Panasonic series Camcorders are High Definition Models. Most of them create avchd/mpeg-2 videos.
iMovie claims to be compatible with mts/m2ts files from Panasonic HDC-HS300, Sony DCR-SR47, Canon VIXIA HF200 etc, but many Mac users have problem in importing M2TS files to iMovie, especially raw MTS files, iMovie just can't recognized their camcorders.
iMovie as a proprietary video editing software application, now we often use iMovie`08, `09, `11 or special iMovie for IOS. iMovie allows Mac users to edit their own home movies in DV, HDV, MOV, MPEG-2, MPEG-4 formats directly.
