iPhone 3G very sluggish, keeps crashing out of apps, etc. (iOS 4.2.1)?

iPhone slow and unresponsive. It kicks me out of texting, apps, email, etc. Responds to touch slowly and is very sluggish.

What can I do to fix this? Update to iOS 4.3??

Is there a way to kind of clean the iPhone and get rid of unwanted junk to make it faster??
