iPhone/ AT&T combination. Worth it or not?

I like Apple products, and the iPhone seems pretty cool. The phone itself ain't cheap, but you pay for the cool factor. However it appears AT&T have the US monopoly on this one, and their plans are where it starts to get really steep. The cost of the phone is swamped within two phone-bills. I'm really quite handy with technology, but I'm way behind in mobile telecoms 'cos I eschewed cellphones for a very long time. It's very difficult to compare costs, since all the websites use different structures for their pricing plans.
As a limited texter, who makes short infrequent calls, but would like to email from his phone, has international text and voice contacts, and roams outside the continental US twice a year...
...how does the iPhone and AT&T measure up in value for money?
...and I've heard AT&T is no longer the exclusive provider for iPhone plans in the US. Is that true? Verizon ain't advertising it well on their website if it is...

I can honestly tell you that I know at least 15 people with iPhones and all of them will never leave it alone, I also have one and would not trade it for anything, in fact after I got one I really started wonder why I waited so long to get one, I would recommend it to anyone, hope this helps
