iPhone Backup Data Transfer Between iOS 6 and 5 possible?

I'm currently running iOS 6 on my phone, is it possible for me to transfer my backup data (through itunes) onto another iPhone which is running iOS 5 or do both operating systems have to be the same in order to transfer backup data?
