iPod touch has vertical lines on the screen?

I have an iPod Touch that was purchased in February of 2008. I turned it on the other day and now I see vertical lines all over the screen. The lines are more noticeable when the screen is white (i.e. reading an email). Why is my iPod screen like this and how can I fix it? I called Apple Support and they suggested I do a restore, which did not solve the problem.

i have a ipod touch 4th gen. got it in december 2010. i just recently went to turn in on and it appeared dead so i plugged it in to my computer and after a couple minutes of charging the apple logo appears and in the process of going to the home screen it just turnes in to vertical lines. i tried holding the sleep/wake button and home button but no responce what so ever. HELP!
