As a student, I often wonder what kind of a measurable impact education brings to a society. College exposes people to the idea of equality among all peoples, though outsiders tend to view this as not the norm and sometimes even un-American. People down South are generally still intolerant of people that don't look like them and it goes without saying that gays don't get treated with respect there either.
College is almost like a bubble, an experimental society where progressive ideals are the pillars of values and beliefs. Everyone is careful not to insult another person's rationality and there is a greater awareness of political injustice. We're constantly asked to think what we could do to make society better. What we could do to make it a more tolerant and accepting of diversity. I don't know if this is the kind of world that could ever take place because once we graduate, all of these values and beliefs will naturally evaporate. People will go back to their old selves, conforming to society's expectations and adopting all of its old prejudices.
