Is dante alive or dead?

XXXIV chapter mentions that upon seeing such a horrifying sight of hell, dante himself doesnt know whether or not he is alive....
so is dante alive or dead? it looks to me he is dead...but this chapter mentions he doesnt know he is alive or dead...
plz help me...!!
