Is downloading music from filesharing sites illegal in NY?

I got an ipod for Hannukah recently, and I wanted to download some music to my ipod. My friends said use Limewire, or Torrent, but I don't want to do anything illegal. Can I download music from those filesharing sites without breaking a law? I know some laws are different in different states, so what is legal in NY?
