is he not interested anymore, or is he still hurt?

this guy used to ‘really like me’ but I was quite harsh with him by lying to and dumping him (we were very young then). That was a few years ago, and last year I started seeing him on my bus again and my feelings returned. Now, I don’t know what’s going on, but sometimes we’d share eye contacts and I *feel* something. Also, I notice him acting *strange*- jealous- when I talk to other guys and he sees me. But he never talks to me, and once when I asked him what was going on between us, he said, ‘nothing. We’re just acquaintances’. Obviously, this really hurt me. He still kissed me on the cheek after that, and we even exchanged numbers, but when I asked him out, he just ignored me. That was a few months ago, but still, we share eye contact sometimes, and he still acts rather jealous when I talk to other guys. Also, the two times i've talked to him he acted friendly enough, but after two days, he just pretends im no one again, and we're back to being 'strangers'. He sometimes also avoids my gaze, and avoids being around me, while at other times, I catch him already looking at me, and we share around 2-3 seconds of just looking at each other before I turn away, embarrassed. Why is he like this?

also, his friends always look at me and smile, like they know something, but i don't know them! and whenever i pass him/see him now, i just pretend to ignore him like i don't care, because i dont want to embarrass myself by making him think that i still like him when nothings really happening between us. is this bad?
