Is it a mistake to use Debit Cards on vacation?

You betcha! Suppose you vacation in the Disney area and you purchase $800 worth of attraction tickets with your debit / check card and during the transaction there is a sudden power glitch due to a t-storm, the merchant card system automatically redials and your checking account is then charged twice for $1600 sometime more; once for the authorized purchase and once for the failed transmission which will show up as a pending on your account for 3-5 days. Any failed transmission of a debit card purchase will result in a pending charge for that amount. The bank assumes the attempted transaction of a debit card to be a valid charge.

Now imagine you're on vacation and use your debit card to rent a car at the airport, to check in to the hotel, to buy dinner and then buy attraction tickets, you could be overdrawn at your bank by thousand of dollars for the 3-5 days waiting for the pendings to fall off. It can be caused by storms, power surges, busy cell phone networks, etc.

Customers usually blame the hotel or the ticket agency when they discover the "pendings" and assumed they got double or tripled charged but it is processing company at fault. The vendor (hotel) is the only one who can call your issuing bank to have the pending charges removed but you have to know what you're asking them to do. Most vendors are unfamiliar with the process and will attempt to blame your bank. If the vendor would run a Reconciliation Report your unauthorized charge would show as a Reject with your last 4 digits of your card, but that reject shows as your bank's pending.

This will not occur with credit cards as the transaction must complete to post.
