Is it better to drive a standard vehicle in low rpms or high?

I have a 5 speed Nissan Xterra. I've been told conflicting advice. One person says to drive it in a gear where the rpms are high and the other says it's better to drive it in a gear where the rpms are lower. Example - if I'm driving 45 miles an hour should I be driving in 4th where the rpms are 2500 or in 5th where the rpms are 2000?
